Wish I had a Nude

So this is a funny story.

I am not an art student (though I am a student of art) and therefore do not have access to nude models. So in a socially moral attempt to further my personal art education I've started to make my own nude models in my head, and where do I go to find them? Barnes & Nobles. I sit at BN in one of those comfy and cozy little chaises and discreetly sketch out the bodytypes of individuals around me. Then I go home and undress them in my mind to produce "nude studies".

I kind of wish this woman knew that I was doing this.

Make Models

These were painted as part of my night art classes at UT; the woman is my first model, though I purposely made her more plasticy than in real life. I felt like the plasticicity of her eyes really reflected the lifenessness of her character. This was for the most part a study, and I learned some very good techniques particularly about how to build a face which is quite possibly one of the most difficult things I've ever attempted in oil.

Pseudo Portraits of myself and my friend Ben. I am unfinished (in more ways than one) and am still deliberating over whether to make all blackness. Am I like that?

Microscopic Exploration

This is one of a string of pieces based on SEM images taken by scanning electron microscopes of microscopic phenomena. Appearing both alien and intrusive this head of a microscopic worm is brought to life in a nearly 1000 fold magnification.

This blog is intended to record, document and tabulate my artwork and conceptual meanderings. My work seeks to illuminate the very real and subtle relationship between art and science (as especially exemplified by the Evolution of Paintings project undertaken in 2007). As of recently I have been interested in combing the aesthetic qualities of biology, Christian iconography and victorian kitsch.
